How to better communicate and meet expectations using effect mapping

Delivering projects on time and budget isn’t enough. Meeting the client’s expectations of the outcome of a project is equally important. In this talk I will introduce effect mapping – a method that helps you deliver what the client expects and wants and offers a high level business value view from initial meeting to release party.

Many projects fall prey to obsession with details, poor prioritization and inability to deliver what the client expects – often referred to as business value. Effect mapping addresses these problems. It is based on the fact that that value is only delivered when and if the site is being used. It focuses on the intended goal of a project, the effect, and how it’s achieved by meeting user needs and expectations.

Effect mapping provides answers to questions like

  • How can we motivate spending XXX XXX kr on this? (effect)
  • Is this site working the way it is intended, and if it’s not what can we do to fix it? (metrics)
  • Who will be visiting and using this site? (target groups)
  • Why should my customers bother about visiting our site? (user goals)
  • How can we know whether our site meets the needs of our customers? (user goal metrics)
  • What features does our site need? (actions and user stories)

I will also explain the effect map document – a bird’s eye view of your project, its intended effect, goals, stakeholders and user stories.

In this session you will learn:

  • What effect mapping is and why it works
  • How to apply effect mapping in your own projects
  • Identify effect, goals, stakeholders and develop user stories
  • Produce an effect map to guide your project

Intended audience

Project managers, managers, developers, interaction designers, web strategists

Questions answered by this session

  • What is effect mapping and how does it work?
  • How can a focus value guide the project process?
  • How do I identify stakeholders and their role in delivering value?
  • What is an effect map and how is it made?
  • How do I communicate more effectively with my client about value?
